Can armchairs change into flowers? Flowers of an unknown species, featuring four fleshy petals and strong roots. Abstract flowers, capable of enriching nature thanks to Ron Arad’s creative talent.

RON ARAD, born in Tel Aviv in 1951, educated at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and later at the Architectural Association in London, co-founded with Caroline Thorman the design and production studio One Off in 1981 and later, in 1989, Ron Arad Associates architecture and design practice. In 2008 Ron Arad Architects was established alongside Ron Arad Associates.

From 1994 to 1999 he established the Ron Arad Studio, design and production unit in Como, Italy. He was Professor of Design Product at the Royal College of Art in London up until 2009. Ron Arad was awarded the 2011 London Design Week Medal for design excellence and became a Royal Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2013.

Ron Arads constant experimentation with the possibilities of materials such as steel, aluminum or polyamide and his radical re-conception of the form and structure of furniture has put him at the forefront of contemporary design and architecture.

Alongside his limited edition studio work, Arad designs for many leading international companies including Kartell, Vitra, Moroso, Fiam, Driade, Alessi, Cappellini, Cassina, WMF and Magis among many others.Creator: Ron Arad (Designer),Driade (Manufacturer)Dimensions: Height: 29.7 in (75.44 cm)Width: 26 in (66.04 cm)Depth: 21.2 in (53.85 cm)Seat Height: 16.7 in (42.42 cm)Style: Modern (Of the Period)Materials and Techniques: PlasticPlace of Origin: ItalyPeriod: 21st CenturyDate of Manufacture: 2017Production Type: New Custom(Current Production)Estimated Production Time: 1-2 weeksCondition: NewSeller Location: Brooklyn, NYReference Number: 1stDibs: LU163928605343Shop All Ron Arad

Driade

Italian furniture brand Driade offers modern designs that are joyful, whimsical and slightly mischievous words that might be used to describe the tree nymph of Greek mythology for which the company is named. Faye Toogoods chunky, stout Roly Poly armchair and Fabio Novembres enigmatic Nemo chair in which a backrest assumes the form of a human face are just two examples of Driades eclectic furnishings.

Driade was founded in 1968 by brother and sister Enrico and Antonia Astori, and Adelaide Acerbi Astori, Enricos wife. Described by the company as a factory of art, Driade was focused solely on bringing distinctive and creative seating, case pieces and decorative objects to market in its early years. The brand sought to mass-produce decor and furniture that could also be seen as provocative works of art.

Driade’s initial collaborations included Italian designers such as Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, Giotto Stoppino and Rodolfo Bonetto, to name a few. In the 1980s, the brand worked with influential and renowned designers from around the globe. In 1984, Driade partnered with French designer Philippe Starck and debuted his iconic Costes armchair during the same year. Projects with architects and furniture designers such as Ron Arad, Toyo Ito, Borek Sipek, Patricia Urquiola and others followed into the 2000s.

Over more than five decades the company celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2018 Driades fruitful partnerships have culminated in a vast catalog of chairs, sofas, coffee tables and other furnishings for the home and garden that evoke a unique and diverse blend of cultures.

Driade has also garnered international acclaim, winning the Compasso dOro award in 1979 and 2001 for Enzo Maris Delfira chair and ebony-finished, chipboard-top table, and again in 2008 for Ron Arads MT3 rocking armchair.

On 1stDibs, discover a range of vintage and contemporary Driade tables, cabinets, armchairs and other furniture.
