About the Item
80s Very Rare Set of Vintage Postmodern Memphis Geometric Distressed Glass Gold Leaf Designer Hivo Van Teal Table Lamps – a Pair
Extraordinary and Super Rare Pair of 80s Postmodern Glass and Iron, Stacked, Acid Washed, Distressed Table Lamps by Designer Hivo Van Teal.
Van Teal made a very limited number of acid washed, distressed lighting pieces.
In the 1980s, these were exclusively custom designed, and considered very high end art pieces. They were the “Haute Couture” of lighting when “Grunge” became the rage in Palm Beach.
These lamps, remind me of the scene, in the 1980s movie, “Greed”, after Charlie Sheen made it on Wall Street then redecorated his condo with torn wall paper, fractured plaster cove moulding, wild textures and acid washed furnishings.
The lamps rest upon an iron tripod bases.
The iron legs are curled and have an applied Gold Leaf finish
All of the gold elements on these lamps are finished with hand applied gold leaf
The body of the lamp, consists of three very dense, solid, acid washed glass geometric sections. Each are separated by gold leafed, 3″ diameter balls
The bottom piece is an 8″ diameter light pink glass half circle.
The center element is an acid washed, teal, inverted cone, 4″ in height
The top part is a 5.5″ diameter, lovely Raspberry colored glass half circle.
Because glass is dense and solid, the lamps are extremely heavy.
Everything is distressed, or acid washed, including the gold leaf. It’s most prominently seen on the teal section Any seemingly “imperfection”, is part of the design.
Note: THE SHADE IS NOT INCLUDED
I personally spoke. to Mr Van Teal’s son, who told me the original shades for this lamp set were gold. However, l have posted other lovely complementary options to consider.
The gold shade l used, and the other colored shades, are available from a major online seller. These shades Include the proper height harp and a finial. Unfortunately, they only offer it in silver.
A Gold finial will mask the silver of the harps This retailer will ship the shades to you for free. Perhaps you can request gold plated harps from the retailer
Since folks often have questions about the correct shade heigh to pair with a lamp, l have posted all the dimensions of the lamp and the photos shade used.

Hivo Van Teal
After fleeing Havana as a young man, Hivo Van Teal was able to unleash his artistic sensibilities and launch an award-winning lighting and accessories company. Creating sculpture shapes in acrylic soon became a passion. In 1974, I opened a 600-square-foot studio close to my house in Miami Beach,” Hivo recalls. “Together with Estela, I made my first sculptures named ‘Family,’ ‘Atlanta,’ and ‘Prism.’ A friend of mine who was a furniture representative saw them and exhibited them at a show in Miami Beach. Euster Furniture was one of the most exclusive high-end showrooms in Miami, and Mr. Euster was very impressed with my sculptures and gave us a $10,000 order. And that was the beginning of Van Teal, Inc.
Soon, art galleries in Florida and retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue in Bal Harbour, and I. Magnin in Washington, D.C., began selling Van Teal sculptures. In 1976, Van Teal, Inc. opened its first showroom at the High Point Market in North Carolina. Van Teal has been singled-out for excellence by winning First Prize for Contemporary Sculptures from ACCA (1986, 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1992) and received two ARTS Awards (1995 and 1996).
