About the Item

A French gold gilt mirror from the 1800s in narrow proportions, though dense with luxurious floral carvings on each corner and in parallel rows of molding around the rectangular frame. This nearly symmetrical frame has a lustrous gilded finish blooming with red bole that adds dimension and texture to the already sculptural design. Each corner is adorned with a bouquet of flowers tied with a ribbon, a romantic theme borrowed from the court of Louis XVI, echoed again by sunflowers projecting with vitality from the left and right sides. Along the outer edge of the molding is an alternating pattern of smooth and ornate cartouche designs, becoming abstract through repetition. The original mirror plate shows minimal foxing in very concentrated spots, where light crystallization is visible along the upper edge that sparkles in the light.
