Its dense foliage provides excellent shelter for wildlife and its pyramidal shape requires minimal maintenance to maintain its attractive form.

Plant Care

Canadian Hemlocks thrive with consistent moisture but require well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Regular mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. While naturally pest-resistant, monitor for woolly adelgid in affected regions. Annual pruning in late spring maintains desired shape and size, though the tree naturally forms an attractive pyramidal structure.

Young trees benefit from winter protection against harsh winds and heavy snow. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth. Remove any dead or yellowing branches promptly to maintain the trees appearance and health.

Planting Instructions

Plant Canadian Hemlock in spring or early fall for optimal establishment. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and equal in depth. Remove the container and gently loosen the roots before placing in the hole. The top of the root ball should be level with or slightly above the soil surface.

Backfill with original soil mixed with organic matter, tamping down gently to remove air pockets. Create a water basin around the tree and water thoroughly. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.
