About the Item
A striking combination of realism and abstraction, this portrait of a nude male youth with his arms behind his neck — Stanley Christensen — is beautifully expressed in tones of charcoal, ruddy brown and black. The painter was Viggo Jarl, a Danish artist who is best known as a sculptor of nude figures, often cast in bronze, so this painting is a notable exception in his oeuvre. He won the Grand Prix de Rome and exhibited at the Paris Salon des Artistes Franais. Jarl’s sculpture was shown at the 1928 Olympics art exhibition, and his works are now in the Anneberg Collections and Copenhagen’s Statens Museums For Kunst. The painting is oil on canvas, and includes an inscription on the stretcher bar.Dimensions: Height: 29 in (73.66 cm)Width: 20.5 in (52.07 cm)Depth: 1 in (2.54 cm)Style: Art Deco (Of the Period)Materials and Techniques: Paint,PaintedPlace of Origin: DenmarkPeriod: 1920-1929Date of Manufacture: 1921Condition: GoodOverall excellent condition, with minor paint losses.Seller Location: Philadelphia, PAReference Number: 1stDibs: LU865141581532
