Plant Care
Black Willows require minimal maintenance once established. Regular watering is essential during the first growing season to develop a deep root system. Prune dead or damaged branches in late winter to maintain shape and health. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth.
Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weed growth, but keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot. Monitor for common willow pests such as gypsy moths and scale insects, treating as needed with appropriate insecticides.
Planting Instructions
Plant Black Willows in spring or fall when temperatures are mild. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and equal in depth. Remove the tree from its container and gently loosen the roots. Place in the hole, ensuring it sits at the same depth as it was growing in the container.
Backfill with native soil, tamping down gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk. Stake if necessary in windy areas, removing stakes after one year.
