About the Item

A refined trumeau mirror of the Louis XVI period, dating to the 18th century France, with elegant, gilt wood carvings mounted on an ebonized back panel. Scrolled foliate carvings at the top of the piece, like laurel, call attention to the symbolic cartouche at center with vines that extend down to the upper edges of the molding, softening the rectangular geometry of the frame. The original mirror plate is dusted with linear patterns of foxing, protected by a low, beaded trim. Neoclassical references continue at the lower corners which transition into little feet like inverted artichokes to lift and protect the delicate work.
