In the past houses used to be full of many helpful and small objects, for putting ashes rather than for sewing, for serving purposes rather than for display: they punctuated dwelling places. Giuseppe Chigiotti, by designing Ping, thinks back to those times now passed and creates a small serving furniture item, designed in two versions: “Ping I”, featuring the function of generic holder or catchall, and “Ping II”, a discrete supporting surface for a glass or a book.
GIUSEPPE CHIGIOTTI (born in Grosseto in 1946) graduated from the University of Florence with a degree in architecture and is an associate professor at the Milan Polytechnic, where he teaches Theory and History of Industrial Design at the Department of Design. After doing researches about history of architecture, he devoted his efforts focusing on the historical roots of design, with a particular interest in the design of furniture and objects for domestic spaces. In particular, he investigated American-Italian events, especially the interplay between production and design. At the same time he also works as a designer.
He wrote books and papers about the theory and history of design and architecture. He contributed to the creation of the collection of the Museo dellArredo Contemporaneo (Museum of Contemporary Furniture). For Driade he also wrote essays for Manuals of Furnishing book and edited two books: A journey through Driade living and Driadekosmo: the world of objects.
He has always combined his university teaching and research activity with architectural and design practice outside the academic world.
His pieces of design have been published in many books and design magazines (Abitare, Casa Vogue, Domus, Ottagono).Creator: Giuseppe Chigiotti (Designer),Driade (Manufacturer)Dimensions: Height: 19.6 in (49.79 cm)Diameter: 8.8 in (22.36 cm)Style: Modern (Of the Period)Materials and Techniques: Aluminum,PolishedPlace of Origin: ItalyPeriod: 21st CenturyDate of Manufacture: 2017Production Type: New Custom(Current Production)Estimated Production Time: 1-2 weeksCondition: NewSeller Location: Brooklyn, NYReference Number: Seller: 89148401stDibs: LU163928627323Shop All Driade
Driade
Italian furniture brand Driade offers modern designs that are joyful, whimsical and slightly mischievous words that might be used to describe the tree nymph of Greek mythology for which the company is named. Faye Toogoods chunky, stout Roly Poly armchair and Fabio Novembres enigmatic Nemo chair in which a backrest assumes the form of a human face are just two examples of Driades eclectic furnishings.
Driade was founded in 1968 by brother and sister Enrico and Antonia Astori, and Adelaide Acerbi Astori, Enricos wife. Described by the company as a factory of art, Driade was focused solely on bringing distinctive and creative seating, case pieces and decorative objects to market in its early years. The brand sought to mass-produce decor and furniture that could also be seen as provocative works of art.
Driade’s initial collaborations included Italian designers such as Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, Giotto Stoppino and Rodolfo Bonetto, to name a few. In the 1980s, the brand worked with influential and renowned designers from around the globe. In 1984, Driade partnered with French designer Philippe Starck and debuted his iconic Costes armchair during the same year. Projects with architects and furniture designers such as Ron Arad, Toyo Ito, Borek Sipek, Patricia Urquiola and others followed into the 2000s.
Over more than five decades the company celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2018 Driades fruitful partnerships have culminated in a vast catalog of chairs, sofas, coffee tables and other furnishings for the home and garden that evoke a unique and diverse blend of cultures.
Driade has also garnered international acclaim, winning the Compasso dOro award in 1979 and 2001 for Enzo Maris Delfira chair and ebony-finished, chipboard-top table, and again in 2008 for Ron Arads MT3 rocking armchair.
On 1stDibs, discover a range of vintage and contemporary Driade tables, cabinets, armchairs and other furniture.
